Comprehensive Cutting & Milling Information
Cutting and milling refers to the use of specialist rotary cutting heads attached to flexible rods or chains, driven by high-powered equipment. These tools are fed into the drain through an access point and guided to the obstruction, where they grind, cut or mill away the blockage material — whether that's tree roots, calcite deposits, concrete intrusions or deformed pipe sections.
Unlike standard drain jetting or rodding, cutting and milling can tackle obstructions that are too hard or too firmly embedded for water pressure alone to shift. It is an essential technique for restoring full bore flow in severely blocked or damaged drainage systems without the need for excavation.
Cutting and milling is typically required when standard drain jetting has failed to fully clear a blockage, when CCTV surveys reveal tree root ingress growing into the pipe bore, when calcite or scale deposits have significantly reduced the internal diameter of pipes, or when deformed or partially collapsed pipe sections are restricting flow.
It is also commonly used as a preparatory step before drain lining — milling away rough or corroded pipe surfaces and cutting back root intrusion to create a clean, smooth bore that the liner can bond to effectively. Our engineers will always carry out a CCTV survey first to confirm that cutting and milling is the right approach for your specific situation.
Tree root ingress is one of the most common causes of serious drain blockages, particularly in older clay and concrete pipes. Roots are attracted to the moisture and nutrients inside drainage systems, and can enter through even the smallest cracks or joints. Once inside, they grow rapidly, filling the pipe bore and causing severe flow restriction or complete blockage.
Our chain flail cutters and rotary root-cutting heads are specifically designed to remove tree roots from within pipes. The cutting heads are fed to the root mass and rotated at high speed to shred and clear the roots, which are then flushed away by water jetting. A post-works CCTV survey confirms the pipe is clear, and we can advise on drain lining to prevent re-entry through the same defects.
Calcite deposits (also known as calcium carbonate scale) can build up inside drainage pipes over time, particularly in chalk-heavy soil areas. These deposits are extremely hard and cannot be shifted by water jetting alone. Left untreated, calcite buildup can reduce pipe capacity significantly and eventually cause complete blockage.
Our tungsten carbide milling heads are designed specifically for calcite and scale removal. Rotating at high speed inside the pipe, the milling heads grind away the deposits layer by layer, restoring the full internal diameter of the pipe. The process is highly effective and can be carried out through existing access points with no excavation required. We include CCTV surveys before and after every milling job to verify the result.
Concrete intrusions occur when concrete or grout enters a drain during construction or repair work — or, in some cases, when the surrounding ground settles and forces material through pipe joints. These intrusions can significantly reduce flow and are extremely difficult to remove without specialist equipment.
Our concrete-cutting and milling heads can break up and remove concrete intrusions of varying sizes and hardness. Combined with a pre-works CCTV survey to locate and assess the intrusion, and a post-works survey to verify clearance, we can restore full pipe capacity without excavation in the majority of cases. Where the intrusion is associated with pipe damage, we can also advise on appropriate repair options such as drain lining.
Before a drain lining can be installed, the pipe must be in a suitable condition to accept the liner — this means a clean, smooth internal surface free from root intrusion, protrusions, encrustations or deformations that could prevent the liner from fitting correctly or bonding effectively to the host pipe.
Pipe profiling using milling and cutting equipment prepares the pipe bore to the required standard. Our engineers remove all obstructions, smooth rough surfaces and cut back any root intrusion or calcite deposits to leave a clean profile ready for lining. This preparatory work is typically carried out in the same visit as the lining installation, minimising disruption and overall project cost.
Every cutting and milling job carried out by Bournemouth Drains includes both a pre-works and post-works CCTV drain survey. The pre-works survey allows our engineers to precisely locate the obstruction, identify its nature and extent, and select the most appropriate cutting head and technique. You'll receive a full report with footage before any physical work begins.
The post-works survey is equally important — it confirms that the pipe bore is fully clear, identifies any further issues within the drainage system, and provides you with a record of the completed works. Where further remediation such as drain lining is required, the post-works survey footage forms the basis of our recommendations and quotation for follow-on work.
For homeowners, cutting and milling services are typically required when persistent blockages cannot be resolved by standard jetting, when CCTV surveys reveal root ingress or calcite buildup, or when drains need to be prepared for lining. We work on all types of domestic drainage including kitchen drains, bathroom drains, toilet soil pipes, rainwater downpipes, and underground drainage.
Our engineers are experienced in working in domestic settings with minimal disruption. All work is carried out through existing access points wherever possible, avoiding excavation and the associated disruption to driveways, gardens or paving. We provide clear quotes before starting work and always leave the site clean and tidy.
Commercial properties often have more complex drainage systems operating at higher volumes, making them more susceptible to calcite buildup, root ingress, and deformation over time. Restaurants, schools, hospitals, industrial premises and retail developments all benefit from regular CCTV inspection and, where necessary, cutting and milling to maintain optimal flow rates.
We offer planned preventative maintenance programmes for commercial clients, incorporating regular CCTV surveys and cutting or milling where required. This proactive approach prevents costly emergency situations and ensures compliance with any drainage maintenance obligations in leases or service agreements. Our commercial team can work out of hours to minimise disruption to your operations.
When a severely blocked drain is causing immediate problems — sewage backing up, flooding, or a critical drainage failure — our emergency cutting and milling service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We dispatch fully equipped engineers to your location quickly, carrying a comprehensive range of cutting heads and jetting equipment to tackle the most challenging blockages at any time.
Our emergency callouts are charged with no call-out fee, and we always provide a clear quote before commencing work. In many emergency situations, we can resolve the blockage and restore drainage flow on the first visit. Where more extensive remediation is needed, we implement temporary measures to prevent ongoing damage while permanent repair work is arranged.
