It is also commonly used as a preparatory step before drain lining — milling away rough or corroded pipe surfaces and cutting back root intrusion to create a clean, smooth bore that the liner can bond to effectively. Our engineers will always carry out a CCTV survey first to confirm that cutting and milling is the right approach for your specific situation.

Tree root ingress is one of the most common causes of serious drain blockages, particularly in older clay and concrete pipes. Roots are attracted to the moisture and nutrients inside drainage systems, and can enter through even the smallest cracks or joints. Once inside, they grow rapidly, filling the pipe bore and causing severe flow restriction or complete blockage.

Our chain flail cutters and rotary root-cutting heads are specifically designed to remove tree roots from within pipes. The cutting heads are fed to the root mass and rotated at high speed to shred and clear the roots, which are then flushed away by water jetting. A post-works CCTV survey confirms the pipe is clear, and we can advise on drain lining to prevent re-entry through the same defects.

Calcite deposits (also known as calcium carbonate scale) can build up inside drainage pipes over time, particularly in chalk-heavy soil areas. These deposits are extremely hard and cannot be shifted by water jetting alone. Left untreated, calcite buildup can reduce pipe capacity significantly and eventually cause complete blockage.

Our tungsten carbide milling heads are designed specifically for calcite and scale removal. Rotating at high speed inside the pipe, the milling heads grind away the deposits layer by layer, restoring the full internal diameter of the pipe. The process is highly effective and can be carried out through existing access points with no excavation required. We include CCTV surveys before and after every milling job to verify the result.

Concrete intrusions occur when concrete or grout enters a drain during construction or repair work — or, in some cases, when the surrounding ground settles and forces material through pipe joints. These intrusions can significantly reduce flow and are extremely difficult to remove without specialist equipment.

Our concrete-cutting and milling heads can break up and remove concrete intrusions of varying sizes and hardness. Combined with a pre-works CCTV survey to locate and assess the intrusion, and a post-works survey to verify clearance, we can restore full pipe capacity without excavation in the majority of cases. Where the intrusion is associated with pipe damage, we can also advise on appropriate repair options such as drain lining.

Before a drain lining can be installed, the pipe must be in a suitable condition to accept the liner — this means a clean, smooth internal surface free from root intrusion, protrusions, encrustations or deformations that could prevent the liner from fitting correctly or bonding effectively to the host pipe.

Pipe profiling using milling and cutting equipment prepares the pipe bore to the required standard. Our engineers remove all obstructions, smooth rough surfaces and cut back any root intrusion or calcite deposits to leave a clean profile ready for lining. This preparatory work is typically carried out in the same visit as the lining installation, minimising disruption and overall project cost.
